Joseph John Fernandez Sr.

Joseph Fernandez Sr. passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at the age of 86. He was the youngest child of the late Martha Francis Guerra and Frank Fernandez Sr., of LaCoruna, Spain. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy Appel Fernandez. Loving father of the late Laurie Theriot, Joseph Fernandez Jr., and Benito Fernandez. Brother of the late Loretta Stephens, Raymond Fernandez, Martha Fernandez, Anthony Fernandez Sr., Frank Fernandez, Pearl Flautt, Mary Phillips, and Alma Styron. Grandfather of Nicholas and Mindy Theriot. Great-grandfather of Emily, Austin, and Lori Lauzon, and Blakely Gomez.

Mr. Joe, also affectionately called PAPA, was born and raised in Shell Beach. As an Islensos descendent, Mr. Joe loved his life on the waters of St. Bernard Parish; fishing, trawling, crabbing, and trapping. Mr. Joe was a resident of Florissant until Hurricane Katrina when the family relocated to Ponchatoula.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate a Memorial Mass in Joseph’s memory on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2805 BAYOU ROAD, in St. Bernard, at 10:00 AM. He will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery.
