It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leo “Lee’’ Michael Schnell Jr., devoted companion, dedicated father, grandfather and friend. He was the loving companion to his beloved Kathleen Bankston of 31 years. Caring father to Todd Schnell (Robin), Troy Schnell (Debbie), Rene Schnell (Kelly), and Kelly Schnell (Chris Wehmeyer); father figure to Jason Bankston and Brian Bankston (Stacy). Proud grandfather to Logan Schnell, Kasey Schnell-Finch (Cody), Jessica Schnell Duncan (Andrew), Hunter Schnell, Preston Schnell, Londyn Schnell, Grayson Schnell, Gary, Kallie, Avery Wehmeyer and Ashtyn Wehmeyer; grandfather figure to Lara Bankston, Trent Bankston, Paige Bankston and Hanna Bankston. Survived by the mother of Todd, Troy, and Rene, Eileen Schnell; by Kathleen’s mother, Betty Crawford. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leo M. Schnell Sr., and Eris Merigoni Schnell.
Born on May 14, 1943 in New Orleans, LA, Leo graduated from Francis T. Nicholls, and studied at Delgado Community College both in New Orleans. He served in the U.S. Navy as a third class torpedo man aboard the U.S.S. Trigger (SS-564) Submarine. He retired from Murphy Oil Meraux refinery where he worked as an operator, and was a member of United Steelworkers Local 8363. Leo lived a life filled with adventure and passion. He had a profound love for the great outdoors, especially for spending countless hours in the woods hunting. His love for the “thrill of the hunt” was only rivaled by his admiration for antique cars, each vehicle telling a unique story of a bygone era. Up in the country, Leo discovered a place of tranquility and joy. His eyes would light up with the serenity that the countryside offered, away from the hustle and bustle of city life, and perhaps, above all, he was a man of strong family bonds with cherished friendships. He was the heart and soul of every gathering, creating warm memories and stories that will be told for generations to come. He found delight in the simple pleasures of life, often seen riding his bike through the neighborhood. Leo will forever remain in our hearts as a symbol of devotion, love, and the joy of simple pleasures. He has left a void that can never be filled, and his memory will continue to inspire us.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
