Sylvia Ella Marie Bartholomew passed peacefully into her eternal rest on August 4, 2025, in the comfort of her own home, at the age of 86. She was born on August 30, 1938, and was number 11 of 12 children. Beloved wife of the late Raymond Anthony Bartholomew. Dedicated mother of Anthony “Tony” Bartholomew (wife Christine) and Tracie Lynn Irvin (Melville “Wes”). Loving Grandmother of Anthony Paul Bartholomew and Raymond Jesse Oller (Emily). Beloved Great Grandmother (Maw Maw) of Silas James Mackie-Oller.
Sylvia was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and was a resident of Gretna. She was a graduate of Redemptorist High School and worked as a Clerk Typist II for the Federal Reserve Bank prior to marrying the love of her life. She dedicated herself to her marriage and to raising her children in a loving and nurturing environment. Some of their adventures included fishing, swimming lessons, trawling out of Empire, LA, bicycle riding and just pure fun. She was the neighborhood Mom, and she made the best freezy cups in town. Kids would knock on the door and ask if “Mrs. Sylvia could come out to play?” Sylvia loved singing and was a talented musician playing multiple instruments including the piano, clarinet, guitar and drums. She also was a fabulous cook and baker. If you came to her house, you were going to get something to eat.
With faith in God being the foundation of her life, she was a devoted member of the First United Pentecostal Church of New Orleans for over 45 years, where she was known as Sister B. She dedicated her time and talents in numerous roles from usherette to bus driver.
Tony and Tracie would like to express their deepest appreciation to Melville “Wes” Irvin, Jr., who cared for our mom like his very own. Putting your life on hold to care for someone is an unmeasurable sacrifice and we are forever grateful. She was preceded in death by her parents and all 11 of her siblings. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was loved by so many and will be greatly missed. The stone that the builders rejected has become the head cornerstone.
A private burial will be held for her immediate family and friends.
