Yvonne Mattern Steinke

Yvonne Mattern Steinke passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at the age of 89. She was the cherished wife of the late Raymond Steinke. Loving mother of Cindy Cazenave, Karen King, Kim Lalumia and Daryl Horn. Daughter of the late Henry and Louise Mattern. Sister of the late Robert Mattern. She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Yvonne was born in New Orleans, LA, and spent many years as a resident of St. Bernard Parish before eventually making her home in Slidell, LA. In her earlier years she enjoyed a long and fulfilling career with Shell Oil Company. After her retirement, Yvonne embraced her love for travel, exploring new places and cultures with an adventurous spirit and how we loved the stories she’d tell. While she held her family and friends close to her heart, nothing brought her more joy than Zydeco dancing. Whether surrounded by friends, dancing with strangers, or simply moving to the rhythm on her own, if Zydeco music was playing, Yvonne was sure to be dancing.

She will always be remembered for her fierce independence and the joy she found in life's simple pleasures. She was a shining example of how to live life to its fullest, in her own terms.

Rest in peace, dear Yvonne. Your spirit lives on in the memories you've gifted us, and we will carry your joy in our hearts until we meet again.

Yvonne’s family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the entire staff of Greenbriar Nursing Home and Notre Dame Hospice for their care and dedication in making Yvonne’s final days a little more peaceful.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Friday, May 9th from 9:00AM – 11:00AM, followed by a funeral service in Yvonne’s memory beginning at 11:00AM. She will be laid to eternal rest with her beloved Raymond in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
