Dear family:
I realize this is very belated but, to explain, I was just compiling a memory book for my three children as a Christmas gift for next year and one of the questions was, "Who was your favorite elementary school teacher and why?" Out of all  the teachers I had, I chose to write about Mr. Zak.  He was a marvelous teacher - so fair and compassionate yet so funny and well-respected by his students.    After writing the  page for my book, I decided to see if I could find him somewhere on the internet and I was surprised to have found this.  Your family must be so proud of the accomplishments he made after leaving Onahan School - especially earning his Doctorate and having the Science Center named in his honor.  It sounds like you have a very close-knit family as I do and my prayer for you is that you tuck those wonderful memories you have of him deep in your heart to cherish forever!

I was truly saddened to learn of Al's passing. I have many wonderful memories of the time I worked with him at Helm's Day camp and,of course, District 31. His leadership style was grounded in a thoughtful and caring approach, a warm smile, and a sincere desire to serve everyone he meet with. His personal touch made everyone strive to emulate him by serving others. And, of course, his quick wit only glued the day together. He was a great boss and a true friend. I will miss him. Please know that I have been praying for him and you over the past several weeks.         Phil Zarob

I was very sad to hear of Al's passing. In the short time I knew him I found him to be a wonderfully entertaining and interesting person. I always enjoyed looking at all the different carved birds he made. Anyone with that level of skill and craftsmanship is quite unique.    So sorry to hear about Al. He will be missed by many. Had no idea you had relocated to AZ. Tracy lives about 2 miles north  of you and I see her several times each winter when I migrate to Safford. I'll give you a call when I'm heading her way and maybe we can do lunch or dinner. Marilyn lives in Gold Canyon and perhaps the three of us can get together.

Dear Uncle Al, I have nothing but the warmest feelings and memories to thank you for blessing much of my childhood and young adulthood with. We Ryans used to vacation every summer at the Zak residence playing cats and canaries for much of the day and then a few rounds of spoons with the entire family in the evening. You hosted a family of 7 every year with grace and ease and it was always the best of times. It was so good that I recall my folks actually drove off without one of us one year. I think it may have been me or John but I am not sure which. I can recall that we could not wait to arrive and then no one ever wanted to leave. Aunt Jackie would always make the smokie links for breakfast. I can still recall that wonderful smell waking me up in the morning. No better times were ever had on vacation. Dear Uncle Al

I love you. I am very grateful for the gift and blessing you were to my life. 

In remembering a childhood filled with many transitory places and new faces, I found a most poignant solace in every return to Ogallah where you and Aunt Jackie always welcomed us (all seven of us!) with open arms, extreme generosity, and infinite patience! 

I can never forget the comfort of your loving presence(s) and all the fun (and possibly a few shenanigans) we thoroughly enjoyed in our time together.  Do you know I have never enjoyed holiday caroling but for the jolly good times we had doing it at your place with my cousins. Still makes me laugh affectionately to remember it.  The built-out attic room we slept in felt like such a special, secret amazing place! Somehow, being with you all made the world seem quite right!  We had so much fun and rest in your care and company ... and with all of my heart, I thank you!  
I love you Uncle Al.
