Born in Centerville, Kansas in 1928, to J.T. and Jessie Haverfield, Byron was the youngest of seven. He worked on the family farm and later graduated Parker Rural High School in Parker, KS.
He served in the Army in the Korean War. His last tour was at Fort Mason in San Francisco. After the service, he attended San Francisco College of Mortuary Science, where he became a licensed funeral director.
While living in San Francisco, he met Helen Corum at a ballroom dance. Both shared a love of dancing and later taught at Arthur Murray’s School of Dance. The two were married in Sonoma, CA, in 1955.
Soon after marriage, Byron accepted an internship working for Bob Cain in Fort Bragg. He purchased the business in 1960 and named it Cain, Grove and Haverfield, Chapel by the Sea. Later he began the Fort Bragg Ambulance Service. He served the community with tireless dedication until his retirement in 1989.
He loved Fort Bragg and was very involved in the community. He was a member of Footlighters, member and past president of the Fort Bragg Kiwanis club, member of the American Legion Sequoia Post 96 and an avid golfer.
Byron and Helen moved to Sun City West, AZ, upon their retirement where they enjoyed many years of friendship, golf, travel and of course, dancing.
Byron was preceded in death by his wife Helen in 2021, and leaves behind daughter Brenda Mayberry, son-in-law Scott Mayberry, granddaughters Jordan and Sydney Perkins, sister-in-law Joyce Payne, and many nieces and nephews.
