David was born in Saginaw, Michigan on January 3, 1945, to William Hunter and Harriet Woycheese. David’s father was with Standard Oil and moved his family many times as David was growing up. One constant and favorite memory was spending summers with his Aunt Vi and cousins at Long Lake, Indiana as a child. The childhood moves allowed David to explore the states of Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri and back to Escanaba, Michigan where David graduated from Escanaba High School in 1963.
In high school, David excelled and won honors in both academics and sports. Football, basketball, track and golf were his favorites. David remained a sports enthusiast throughout his life, both as a participant and an observer. In fact, on David’s bucket list was to play the top 100 golf courses in the world. He fell short, but not by much.
Books of all kinds were devoured by David, giving him a wealth of knowledge on many topics. He always had a story to tell or information to share with family and friends.
David attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he attained undergraduate degrees in Marketing, Accounting and Information Systems in 1967. He graduated with a master’s degree in Business Administration in 1968. He joined the ∑AE Fraternity and was very active in student government. He also worked for United Airlines as a university liaison in event planning.
It was at the university that David met his college sweetheart, Jackie Peterson on Friday, March 13th 1964. He called Jackie the “love of his life.” They were married in 1966, just before senior year. Together David and Jackie built a beautiful family of 4 successful children: Andrew W. Hunter (Amy); Allison R. Burke (Keith); Braden D. Hunter (Laura) and Lynne M. Bell (Rod-deceased). These four children and their wonderful spouses gifted David and Jackie with 10 amazing grandchildren: Zachariah and Nathaniel Hunter; Kaylin, Kyeler, and Karsen Burke; Kelsey, William, and Trenton Hunter; and Reese and Rachel Bell. Sadly, through a tragic accident, David was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Judith Hunter Patton, brother-in-law George Patton and niece Susan Patton. Judy left behind our Lynne; and David and Jackie’s special nephew and niece, Greg Patton and Cheryl Serrano (Sammy). David has remained intently devoted to his entire family, and they to him until the end of his life.
David served in the Army Air Defense Command in both Wisconsin and Illinois from 1968-1974. Like his father before him, David moved his growing family numerous times to places around the country; Madison, Wisconsin; Chicago, Illinois; White Plains, New York; Springfield, Illinois; Kansas City, Missouri; and Scottsdale, Arizona. After the children were grown, David’s business pursuits continued to relocate him to San Francisco, California; Seattle, Washington; College Station, Texas; and back to Chicago.
David’s career as a Management Consultant began at Touche Ross (Deloitte Touche) where he became a Partner. Other business endeavors throughout his career included: Integrated Resources Investments; KPMG, Partner; Vertical Systems Consulting; Insurance Information Exchange, President; CNA Information Technology Sr. VP; Career Education Corp., Financial Operations Sr. VP. HUB International Insurance Brokerage, Financial Analysis, Sr. VP; and JOAT Independent Consulting, Principal, until and after his retirement in 2009 when he moved to Sun Lakes, where he resided until his death.
David had a dry sense of humor and a gift for writing especially beautiful letters. He enjoyed a unique and varied set of interests which he enthusiastically shared with his family and friends. Some of his favorites were: tinkering with oil painting, winter ski trips, Blue Bell ice cream, a 1979 white Corvette, biking, baking pies, aviation, classical music, rollerblading, Boyd’s Resort in Wisconsin with the grandkids, boating and waterskiing in Lake of the Ozarks as a family, gourmet cooking, traveling, Garrett Popcorn – Go Badgers, Go Packers!! He loved his companion Cocker Spaniels, Molly and Marnie.
We will miss Our David, Our Dad, Our Grandpa, Our Uncle and Our Mentor immensely. He will live in our hearts forever.
The family members are planning a private Celebration of Life. David will come home to stay with Jackie until her passing. At that time, they will be interred in the Hunter Family Crypt at the Valley of the Sun Cemetery in Chandler, Arizona. No memorial service is being planned at this time. The family requests that if you wish to express sympathy, please choose your favorite charity and donate in David’s honor. A gift given by you, is gifted back to you in David’s name.
