Donald Clarence Hurley, 87, died peacefully September 3, 2014 at home surrounded by two of his sons and his daughter. He is survived by his sister, Evelyn Gertsch of Arizona; his four children, Stephen Hurley of Indiana, Mark Hurley of Arizona, Gene and Sarah Hurley of Nevada, and Joan Flippo of Arizona; 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Services were held at Valley of the Sun Mortuary on September 8, 2014 and Don was laid to rest in the cemetery there next to Joyce, his beloved wife of 48 years.
Dad worked for his brother-in-law, Harvey Gertsch, at Harvey's garage for several years before going to work for United Dairymen of Arizona until his retirement in 1989. For years, he continued to take odd jobs fixing all types of vehicles - cars, tractors... if it was broken, he could fix it! He often involved his boys in that work, much to their chagrin at times, unless of course, it was one of their cars!
He loved his family fiercely, and he loved to laugh. You knew you were loved if you were on the receiving end of a middle-of-the night wake-up call (complete with lots of chuckling as he quickly hung up), or an early morning invitation to the restaurant for biscuits and gravy.
As much as he liked living in Arizona, in later years he loved visiting his family in Nevada during the summer. There he especially enjoyed lunch, laughter and camaraderie with the "old folks" at the senior center. He always had lots of stories to share when he came home.
Our Dad's smile and presence will be greatly missed in this life, but we look forward to the day when we will be reunited in eternity with Christ.
Arrangements under the direction of Valley of the Sun Mortuary, Chandler, Arizona.
