

Essie “Del” or “Della” Adele (Redman) Haynes, of Chicago, Illinois, born on November 29, 1925 in Beaverville, Illinois, to the late Inez Pearl Wright and the late Fred Winfield Redman, passed away in her sleep at age 93 on May 2, 2019 in Tempe, Arizona. Essie was married to the late John Scott Haynes. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Earl Wright Redman and William Winfield Redman; sister, Norma Jean Redman; grandmothers, Margaret Josephine Cook and Hazel Adelle Timmons; grandfathers, Henry Winfield Redman and Harvey William Wright; great-grandmothers, Margaret A Brown, Catherine Pence, Mary A Grooms, and Mary L McDonald; and great-grandfathers, Josiah Winn Redman, Allen Cook, William Wright, and Ephraim Timmons.
Essie is survived by her daughters, Della Marie Morris-Francis and husband Greg, Bonnie Lynn Haynes-Dolbeer and husband Bob, and Mickey Sue Haynes-Connor and husband Brian; grandchildren, Larry Everett Morris and Calvin Scott Francis.
Essie spent her early years enjoying going to Oak Street Beach in Chicago and going out dancing, and bowling. She also worked at her mother’s Dry-Cleaning Shop on 28 E Division Street. She met her husband John on a blind date at the famed Aragon Ballroom in Chicago in 1949. John was in Navy Boot Camp at the Great Lakes Academy. Essie and John were married in Chicago on February 22, 1951. They were married 48 years upon John’s passing.
After getting married, she traveled to many states with John. They traveled to San Francisco and lived there while John was getting Air Craft Carrier training. From there, they went to Washington State so John could get aboard the Bay-class escort carrier the USS Point Cruz. While he was out to sea during the Korean War, Essie lived with another Navy wife Pat Fitzgerald for a year.
After the Korean War, Essie and John moved to West Virginia, so John could obtain his degree in Electrical Engineering. They then moved to many more states, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, and finally settling in Chandler Arizona. Essie was a devoted mother and housewife. She lived in Chandler for almost 39 years. Essie was part of the Greatest Generation that ever lived.
The graveside service will be private. The funeral home will be Valley of the Sun Mortuary & Cemetery, 10940 East Chandler Heights Rd, Chandler, 480-895-9232.
