Floyd was born in St. Lucas, Iowa June 13,1936 to Theresa and Louis Sloan, the 6th of nine
children.
A graduate of Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, Floyd and his wife Joan of Dyersville, Iowa
moved to Des Moines, Iowa to begin their young lives together. Floyd worked 35 years for
Equitable of Iowa Life insurance Company finishing his career as Southwest Regional Vice
President in Phoenix. His career allowed him and Joan to travel widely across the country as
well as internationally. He and Joan retired to Phoenix in 1990 where many happy hours were
spent in their backyard pool facing the desert foothills in Ahwatukee, Arizona.
Floyd loved playing golf and watching nearly all sports, particularly college and professional
football. After retirement Floyd worked as a ranger at Ahwatukee Country Club for many years.
In addition to his part time work and love of reading political thrillers, he and Joan travelled
frequently to spend time with their children and grandchildren.
Always the consummate host, Floyd loved entertaining friends and family. A cocktail was never left to go empty and no one ever left hungry. His love of pecan pie is legendary.
He was a devout Catholic and most recently an active member of St. Steven’s Catholic Church, Sun Lakes, Arizona.
Floyd is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan of Sun Lakes, Arizona, son Kevin Sloan (Mark) of
Denver, Colorado, daughter Sarah (Sloan) Sims (Greg) of Littleton, Colorado and grandchildren
Connor Sims of Boulder, Colorado and Katherine Sims of Denver, Colorado.
