Born at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut, Mike spent most of his life in Westport before retiring to Gilbert, Arizona. It was in Westport where he built his career, raised his family, and formed lifelong friendships.
He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Private First Class (PFC). During his service with the 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, he served as a Tank Crewman (MOS 1811), with his final assignment as a Rifle Range Coach — a role that reflected both his discipline and leadership. Following his military service, he worked as a dedicated electrician for Tarala Electric in Norwalk, Connecticut, where he was known for his strong work ethic, skill, and reliability.
Athletics and youth sports were central to Mike’s life. He dedicated countless hours to mentoring young athletes and giving back to his community. He coached St. Luke’s CYO basketball and was deeply involved in Westport youth sports for many years.
Mike coached the Westport Little League Jaguars, leading them to three town championships. He also coached the Westport Babe Ruth League’s Schaeffer’s Sporting Goods team, guiding them to two championships, and twice served as the Babe Ruth League Head All-Star Coach. His leadership, competitiveness, and passion for the game left a lasting impact on the young athletes he mentored.
In addition to his dedication to coaching, Mike enjoyed a distinguished competitive softball career. He was inducted into the Connecticut ASA Hall of Fame and recognized by the Westport Sportsmen for his accomplishments. A Senior Softball World Champion and Connecticut ASA State Champion in 1962, he earned multiple batting titles, MVP honors, and championships throughout his playing years.
He spent much of his career with Sonny’s Softball Team, contributing to a remarkable 120–10 season. He also played with Chatham Oaks and Laurels AC and competed in several world tournaments. One of his most memorable performances came at the Arthur Bennett Tournament in Newtown, where he was named MVP.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, Carol Valiante Calise; his children, Michael Calise, Debbie Wohlforth, Dominick Calise, and Grace Hodges.
He is also survived by his sister, Katherine Calise.
He was a proud grandfather to Michael “Mikey” Calise (Samantha), Heather Hohimer (Stephen), Christy Leon (Matt), Christopher Wohlforth (Christina), Erika Calise, Caitlin Hodges (Zach), Anthony Calise, and Nicholas Hodges.
He was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren — Cameron, Austin, Madison, Troy, Wyatt, Dylan, Harper, and Blake — and one great-great-grandchild, Makayla.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dominick and Jeane Calise; his brother, Douglas Winton; and his beloved son-in-law, Bruce Hodges, who shared a special bond with him.
Mike will be remembered as a devoted husband, proud Marine, hardworking electrician, respected coach, fierce competitor, and a man who deeply loved his family. His legacy lives on not only in championships and record books, but in the countless lives he influenced on and off the field.
A Funeral Mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church, located at 1534 North Recker Road, Mesa, Arizona, 85205. The service is scheduled for February 27, 2026, starting at 10:00 am.
