

Robert (Bob) was born August 7, 1922. He was one of two children of Frank and Ruth (Roxbury) Babicke. He was born in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, New York. Bob and his brother Ed spent much of their childhood with their beloved grandmother Anna (Cygalis) Babicke. He graduated from Manual Training High School in Brooklyn in 1940. After graduating from high school, he worked as a head shipping clerk for Almo Trading and Importing Co., in New York City for two years. World War II broke out and Bob joined the Navy on September 5, 1942. He was a radioman on the YMS 55 (a mine sweeper) off the coast of Northern Africa. He was reassigned to the YMS 21 which saw action off the coast of Sicily and France in the Mediterrean. On September 1, 1944, while clearing a mine field in Toulon Harbor France, the YMS-21 struck a mine and sunk losing part of the crew. Bob was unharmed and reassigned to the Albert W. Grant, a destroyer, docked in Oakland Ca. Bob was granted some leave after losing his ship. He returned to Brooklyn during his leave and married his high school sweetheart Doris Lindquist on October 22, 1944. Soon after, Bob shipped off on the A.W. Grant destroyer and saw action in the south pacific.
After the war, Bob joined the New York City Police Department as a patrolman and retired as a Detective 2nd grade. Later he had a second career as an Insurance adjuster and claims examiner.
Bob and Doris had seven children, six boys and one girl. Doris, Bob and family lived in Brooklyn, N.Y until Bob’s retirement from N.Y.P.D. when they moved to Rockland County, N.Y. They then moved to New Mexico, then Arlington, Texas and finally settled in the Phoenix area in 1989. Bob and Doris loved to dance. He loved all sports especially baseball and golf. Most of all he loved his wife, his children, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his wife, Doris of 69 years and his brother, Edward, a fellow NYPD policeman. He is survived by his children, Robert Jr., Thomas, Dennis, John, Doreen, William and Timothy and their spouses, his seventeen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
