

Born in Whitmire, SC on February 7, 1936, he was a son of Tessie Ramsey Gillespie. He was reared by his grandparents, Ralph and Mamie Gaffney. He was a member of Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church where he had served on the Church Council, was a Vacation Bible School and Sunday school teacher, a member of the Leisure Timers, and served on various committees. He graduated from Whitmire High School in 1954 where he excelled in many sports. He coached Little League baseball in Chapin, and he especially loved football and golf. Don was a US Army Veteran, serving 1954 to 1956, and was proud of his service to his country. He was employed by Chapin Red & White and retired from Ellett Brothers. He never met a stranger.
Survivors include his loving wife, Jane Boland Ramsey, and his daughter and son-in-law, LaDona and Alvin Shaver; grandchildren, Marley and Corey Shaver; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kim and Susan Boland; brother-in-law, Jim Johnston; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Iris and Walter Renelt; his brother and sister-in-law, Charles "Sonny" and Ena Ramsey; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Rosalyn and Nick Cumalander; his sister-in-law, Linda Johnston; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Drucilla and Dewey Boland and his mother.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 1 at 11:00 am at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church in Chapin with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church.
