CHAPIN - Mr. Henry Charles Courtney passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 5, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church in Chapin, SC. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
Born in Aiken, SC March 8, 1928, he was the son of the late Jerome H. Courtney and Mae Courtney Ready. He was predeceased by his sister, Willie Marie Boatwright. Henry retired from Prudential Insurance after 28 years. While Henry enjoyed golf and fishing with his family and friends, his family was always first in his heart. Henry taught us the importance of education, honesty, faith, hard work and integrity. He was so proud of his grandchildren and great- grandchildren and was always there for them. Henry also loved playing the mandolin. Playing since his teens, he was an accomplished, well respected musician and played in many Bluegrass bands over the years. While he could be equally comfortable playing with professionals or helping a beginner he constantly tried to get better and learn new techniques. Henry started and hosted a country music radio show in Aiken from 1968-1972 and was a regular picker at Bill’s Pickin Parlor in West Columbia.
While living in Aiken most of his life, Henry was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon. He and his loving wife of 67 years, Millie, moved to Chapin, SC in 2011 to be near their sons.
Surviving are his wife, Millie M. Davis Courtney; sons, Mac Courtney (Stephanie) of Columbia, Don Courtney (Theresa) of Irmo; grandchildren, Michelle Wheeler (Chad) of Wilmington, NC, Ryan Courtney of Columbia, SC., Rebekah Flanagan (John) of Lexington, SC., Emily McGowan (Chris) of Greenville, SC and Sarah Williams (Anthony) of Greenville, SC; great-grandchildren, Chandler, Jack, Cort, Rylee, Cohen, Davis and Laine.
The family would like to thank Henry’s caregivers, Felicia Williams, Bertha Kessler and Sandra Caughman. Also thanks to Lutheran Hospice and Dr. Elaine Roque-Nazario and staff.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of SC, 3223 Sunset Blvd, Suite 100, West Columbia, SC 29169 or Lutheran Hospice, 102 Fortress Dr., Chapin, SC 29036. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home Lexington Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
