Louie W. Whitaker

Born July 8, 1924 in the Beaver Creek Community of Calhoun County, he was a son of the late Henry A. Whitaker and Ethel G. Wise. He was a member of St. Jacobs Lutheran Church, and was retired from the US Army and Georgia-Pacific Corp. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy Seabees in the South Pacific and during peace time in the U. S. Army in Europe and Korea. He retired from the Army in 1974 with 28 years of military service, and in 1989 from Georgia-Pacific Corporation.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, MSG (Ret) Don & Pam Whitaker of Pomaria; daughter and son-in-law, Karen & Leslie Sutphin of Columbia; daughters-in-law, Jacqueline Whitaker of Columbia and Choe Whitaker of Hinesville, GA; sisters, Ruby Bradney of Lexington and Elise Humphries of Blythewood; brother, SSG (Ret.) Burnette O. Whitaker of West Columbia; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Thelma Boland Lindler Whitaker; sons, CPO (Ret.) Alvin L. Whitaker and MSG (Ret.) Gene L. Whitaker; two brothers, Stacy A. and SSG (Ret.) Odis D. Whitaker; and two sisters, Wilma Redeski and Zelma Tumlin.

Services for 1SG Whitaker will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017 at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be United States Army and Navy Honor Guards. Honorary pallbearers will be all Veterans present. All current Military and Veterans are urged to be in uniform, if possible.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the fellowship hall of the church. Memorials may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or the charity of one’s choice.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of Ward 124, of the Stone Veterans Pavilion, for their loving care and kindness during the past year.
