

Andy was born on March 6, 1948, in Mt. Pleasant, North Carolina, to the late Robert and Flozella Garland. As a child, he enjoyed working on farms and playing in the band. He graduated J H Gunn High School in 1966. At the age of 18, Andy answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. He served with pride during the Vietnam war, exemplifying courage, dedication and patriotism. When he returned home, he worked as a forklift driver at Celanese until he retired.
Throughout his life, Andy knew the importance of prioritizing his family and welcomed any opportunity to spend time and create lasting memories with his loved ones. He was an exemplary father, brother, and son.
Andy was an active member in his community. He was a member of M W Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina and a member of the VFW 7775. He also enjoyed volunteering at nursing homes in the local area. In his free time, Andy enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved to read, relax and watch his favorite tv shows and movies. He also found peace in the outdoors and cherished time hiking and keeping up with his lawn.
Andy was an inquisitive, brave and loving man. He leaves behind a legacy of family, patriotism, and commitment. He has made a positive and lasting impact on not only his family, but his community. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him.
In addition to his parents, Andy was predeceased by his siblings, Rowland Davis, Georgia Alexander, Wilene Hampton, Thelma Grady, Robert Garland, Charles Garland, and Joe Garland.
He is survived by his daughters, Shavon Garland, who gave him unconditional love and care as he courageously battled cancer throughout the last 8 years, Celeste Reel, Karen Richardson, and Lisa Garland; sons, Andrew "AJ" Eugene Garland, Jr. and Brian Reel; his sixteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews who loved Andy dearly.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, August 28, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at McEwen Derita Chapel, 6300 Mallard Creek Road, Charlotte, NC 28262 with a funeral service immediately following. Andrew will be laid to rest at Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Boulevard, Salisbury, NC 28144.
