

Born May 8, 1926 in Clarksburg, WV, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Charles Newland Slater and Viola Worden Slater. While in high school, she was affectionately called “Slats”. Following graduation from Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg, she furthered her education at Sullins College in Bristol, VA. She was then employed in the billing department at Monangahela Power Co.
Mrs. Burroughs worked as a secretary to five professors at West Virginia University while her husband was pursuing an education in pharmacy. For twenty years she was bookkeeper for the W. E. Burroughs Safety Shoe Company in Charlotte.
Mrs. Burroughs is survived by five children, Cynthia Lee Thore of Charlotte, Janice Louise Ezzell and husband Steve of Wilmington, Teresa Jane Burroughs and Barbara Ann Burroughs, both of Charlotte and William Slater Burroughs and wife Tamara of Cornelius; seven grandchildren, Allyson Thore Kaylor, Andrew Thore, Ashleigh Thore Carlascio, Kristen Ezzell Holt, Jason Ezzell, Matthew Burroughs, and Michelle Burroughs; four great grandsons and one great granddaughter; as well as her sister, Patricia Hornor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. E. “Bill” Burroughs in 2002; her brother, Charles Slater, Jr.; and son-in-law, Bruce Thore.
A service to celebrate Mrs. Burroughs’ life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 10 at Plantation Estates. Her family will receive friends following the service. Private interment will be in Sharon Memorial Park.
