Ben was the first baby born January 1, 1926 in Greensboro, NC – the 11th of 13 children. Ben’s parents raised Ben and his siblings to approach the world with intellectual curiosity and a deep spiritual respect for their place among all of God’s creation. After graduating from Belmont Abbey College, Ben pursued studies in the seminary where he developed his passion for logic, philosophy, and world religions. Ben earned his Master’s degree from Leval University in Quebec and returned to Charlotte where he taught philosophy and religion at Belmont Abbey College and Gaston College until he retired in 1990.
After serving in the Korean War, Ben met the love of his life, Carolyn Ball (Jerry). They married October 26, 1957 and lived in Charlotte where they raised their children, Jennifer and John.
In addition to teaching, Ben deeply loved the people around him. Above all, he loved his family. In his heart, Ben maintained a special place for his children and granddaughters. In addition, Ben filled his life with friends and through the years he shared many stories over many beers. Ben was fun and funny, kind and generous, and the most gracious of men.
Ben maintained a variety of interests throughout his life. He remained a longstanding member of St. Vincent’s Catholic Church. Ben enjoyed playing golf and pursued his passion as a charter member of Carolina Golf Club. Later, when Ben was ready for a more relaxed pastime, he pursued birding as an active member of the Audubon Society. In quieter times, music and reading filled Ben’s life.
Ben is survived by his wife Carolyn (Jerry), his children Jennifer Berry Holway (Brent Holway) and John Robert Berry (both of Charlotte) and his grandchildren; Haley Holway, Emily Holway, and Katherine Holway.
Ben’s Memorial Mass is scheduled at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at 2pm. There will be a reception to follow in the Msgr. Pharr activity center. McEwen Pineville Chapel is handling the funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
