Bernice Virginia Towery Lane

Born May 30, 1923, Mrs. Lane was a daughter of the late Clevie G. and Beatrice Withrow Towery. She spent the early years of her life in Rutherfordton, moving to Norfolk, VA for a time during World War II. There she participated in the war effort by working in a manufacturing plant packing parachutes. Mrs. Lane and her husband moved to Charlotte in 1951.

A member of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church for over 50 years, Mrs. Lane spent her career in Charlotte in the restaurant business where she served as a waitress and hostess. She especially loved greeting people as the hostess of several restaurants including Stamey’s and Ivey’s Tulip Terrace.

Mrs. Lane’s family includes six children, Virginia Colvin (Todd) of Austin, TX, Ruth Turton of Charlotte, Coleman Lane (Susan) of Dawsonville, GA, Roy Lane (Peggy) of Charlotte, Ronald Lane (Sandra) of Mooresville and Alberta Jutovsky (Larry) of Mesa, AZ; and eleven grandchildren, Laura Colvin, Angela Hester, Dan Griffin, Lisa Harmon, Tina Lane, Christel Allen, Wendi Swearingen, Dana Lane, Adam Lane, April Lane, and Jason Jutovsky; as well as thirteen great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by a sister, Phyllis Stacey of Seneca, SC and a brother, Talmadge Towery of Golden Valley, NC.

Her husband, C. C. Lane, preceded her in death in 2003.

A service to celebrate Mrs. Lane’s life will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, November 4th in the chapel of Forest Lawn West Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service.
