Lis was a precious mother, mother-in-law, sister, grandmother and great grandmother.
Born in Atmore, Alabama to Camay and Mulford Odom, she spent much of her youth in Saint Cloud and West Palm Beach, Florida where she met and married Roland Garrido. The couple and their young daughter, Tania, then departed for Charlotte. Soon after in 1956, Lis and Roland opened Rolands Salon as original tenants of the Park Road Shopping Center. Following Roland’s death in 1981, the family continued the operation of Rolands with Lis having worked well into her 80’s at the time the business closed in 2013. Lis, later known as Carol, was a kind, beautiful and humble person with an understated elegance. She laughed easily and became friends with many of Rolands Salon employees and customers. She was an animal lover and took in many strays over the years including a billy goat in need of a home. She was a voracious reader and had many hobbies, did crafts and she had a beautiful voice. Her main passions, however, were painting and singing - along with Cokes, chocolate candy and music. She sang at her 98th birthday party.
Late in life she learned she had half-sisters. Through them she learned their father held out hope they would someday reunite and he kept a picture of young Lis on his a mantle. Sadly, he died before that occurred. She then met more previously unknown family from the Pensacola area. Troy Barton reached out to her and he along with his family made a trip to Charlotte to meet. They stayed in touch until her death.
Lis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Roland, and son, Michael. She is survived by her daughters, Tania Cox (previous husband, Greg Cox), Lygia Garrido Burns (William); her sisters, Mary Boulton of Charlotte and Tammy Hillock (Leo) of Stuart, Florida and granddaughter Sondra Cox Key (Bart); and great granddaughters, Hayden Key Manus (Wyatt) and Bennett Key. Lis would also like to have mentioned her love and affection for her granddaughter by marriage, Kelly Burns Simon (Jason) and great granddaughters, Layla and Hannah Simon.
No formal service is planned. In lieu of flowers, a PBS contribution or a gift to a humane organization would honor Lis.
