She was a vibrant and genuine woman, and the devoted mother of three children—Jennifer Rhoades, Josh Rhoades, and Jason Rhoades—each of whom carries forward her legacy of strength, creativity, and unwavering love.
Carol lived a life marked by curiosity, courage, and authenticity. A proud graduate of The Ohio State University, she embodied the grit and grace of her Midwestern roots. Bright, quick-witted, and ever-stoic, she was a woman who said what she meant and meant what she said—always with integrity, heart, and an unshakable moral compass.
Her professional life was as multifaceted as she was: an accomplished speech therapist, a savvy realtor, a meticulous proofreader, a talented professional wall-paperer, and even a behind-the-scenes correspondent, responding to fan mail for none other than Whitney Houston. Carol’s work was done with purpose and pride, never for show but always with excellence.
Outside of her career, Carol was a true renaissance woman. She adored the theatre and never missed an annual Broadway show, a cherished Mother’s Day tradition. A lifelong animal lover, Carol had a special affection for owls—crafting them with macramé and enlisting young Jennifer to make their eyes for a quarter apiece. Her kitchen in Randolph, New Jersey, bloomed with life from her lush indoor garden of over 30 thriving plants, all lovingly tended by her expert green thumb. When it came to the Rhoades’ home, it was a revolving door and a safe haven for her children, Jennifer, Josh, and Jason’s friends.
Seventeen years ago, Carol moved from Randolph, New Jersey to her new home in Sun City, South Carolina in order to be closer to her family. She became an integral part of her new community, and loved by her many friends.
Music was woven through the fabric of her life. She played both the piano and the flute, and never missed a chance to dance when the music moved her. Her eclectic taste in tunes matched her open-minded spirit. Carol was also a sportswoman, known for her sharp tennis skills and athletic verve. She embraced nature in all its forms, often in animal shows—especially Dr. Pol’s vet program.
Carol’s determination was legendary. Whether breaking her arm while scaling school scaffolding or meeting life’s challenges head-on, she was fearless in both action and heart. Her no-nonsense honesty, fierce loyalty, and deep empathy made her a trusted confidante and a rare, real friend.
But above all, Carol loved—freely, fully, and without hesitation. Her petite frame belied the enormity of her heart. She was the beating heart of her family, a guiding light to her children and an adoring presence in the lives of her grandchildren, Sydney Rhoades and Harrison Rhoades.
Carol Rhoades was a class act, through and through. To know her was to be seen, supported, and loved just as you are. Her absence leaves a deep ache, but her spirit—brave, bold, and beautifully genuine—lives on in all who were lucky enough to stand in her light.
She will be missed dearly and remembered always.
