grandmother and artist, died at her home in Charlotte, NC, on Monday,
August 16, 2010, surrounded by her family. She was 84.
“Kitty” enjoyed a stiff drink of bourbon, a good cigarette, chocolate,
and often held forth that, “Children should have the hell scared out
of ‘em, at least once a year.”
Catherine was born on April 21, 1926, in Charleston, SC, the fourth of
five children born to William George Revel, Jr., and Gertrude Early
Revel. She is survived by her brother Edward Revel of Ponte Vedre,
Florida.
Raised South of Broad St. in Charleston in a seafaring family, she
attended Meminger High School in Charleston, and Mary Washington
College in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Elizabeth Bryan, Catherine’s cousin, introduced her to Oscar Heyward
Bellamy, Jr., originally of Florence, South Carolina, in 1939. Kitty
and Heyward were engaged during Heyward’s service in the U.S. Navy on
the U.S.S. Converse in the South Pacific. After the war, the pair
married on November 10, 1945, in Charleston in the family home on New
Street.
The G.I. Bill took the couple to Clemson College, in 1946, from which
Heyward graduated in electrical engineering in 1949. Son Oscar Heyward
Bellamy, III, “Hank” now of Bluffton, SC, was born in 1947 in Clemson.
Revel Bellamy, now of Marvin, NC, was born in 1950 in Clemson. Mark
Bellamy, now of Weddington, NC, was born in 1951 in Clemson. Heyward
remained at Clemson as a graduate instructor until the couple moved to
Charlotte in 1952. Melissa Bellamy, now Melissa O’Steen and currently
of Beaufort, SC, was born in 1954 in Charlotte.
She bore all four children precisely on their due dates, which
foreshadowed the discipline with which she approached her life’s work
as wife and mother.
A lover of animals including cats, dogs, birds and even fish,
Catherine’s life as a mother to four was paired with five-gaited
horses.
In later life, Catherine concentrated on her art, primarily landscape
impressionism, producing roughly 300 significant paintings and
hundreds of sketches and sketch paintings over a 35-year effort. Her
artwork remains highly coveted by her family, which has grown to
include nine grandchildren, Ethan Bellamy of Denver, Colorado, Leah
Bellamy of Bluffton, SC, Anna Bellamy of Kingston, Tennessee, Grace
Bellamy of Hollywood, California, Rebecca Bellamy of Marvin, NC, Britt
Walsh of Charlotte, Curtis Beshears of Matthews, NC, Bryan Bellamy of
Weddington, NC, and Brislan Bellamy of Weddington, NC, and three great
grandchildren, Charles Bellamy of Denver, CO, Pearl Bellamy of Marvin,
NC, and Isabella Walsh of Charlotte, NC.
The family held a memorial service after Catherine’s death, officiated
by Chaplain James D. Parker of Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte
Region.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice & Palliative
Care Charlotte Region.
