Slick, as he was known to his friends, served his country as a paratrooper in the Korean War.
He began his stock car racing career in the1940’s. He worked with such greats as Cotton Owens, Rex White, Bill Stroppe, John Holman and Ralph Moody of Holman-Moody, Fred Lorenzen, David Pearson, Swede Savage, Darrel Waltrip, Banjo Matthews, Dick Trickle, Cale Yarborough and many more.
Slick loved his dogs that he had throughout his lifetime and most of all he loved sitting around with his friends reminiscing about the good times. His friendship, love, kindness, and generosity were extended to all that knew him. Slick will be missed by his loving family, friends, and all that knew him. Thanks for the memories Slick.
Slick is survived by his wife, Betty “Skeeter” Owens of 56 years; son, Derek Owens; daughters, Debbie and Pam Owens; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and our family friend Barbara Beard.
Services will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers please contribute to any charity of your choice, but hopefully one that saves the lives of animals.
You can hear interviews with Charles “Slick” Owens on the web from the J. Murrey Atkins Library Special Collections and University Archives at UNC Charlotte.
