

After graduating Cheraw High School, she attended Johnson C Smith in Charlotte NC. She then worked at Charlotte Memorial (Atrium) Hospital, with longtime family friend, Maudestine Tidwell Smith who she considered a sister. She also worked for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools as a teacher’s assistant for several years. She later worked as a Food Service Store Manager.
Cheryl met and married Bogan Benton, who preceded her in death. Later she met her longtime companion Coleman Wilson. Following a lengthy illness which caused her rehab and residence at Wilora Lake Skilled Nursing Facility, where she remained until her death on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.
She was preceded in death by her father Charles Calvin (Sonny) McDonnell, Sr; her mother Lillian Mann McDonnell Tucker, and her sister Carolyn McDonnell Ballard (Bobby).
Cheryl leaves to cherish her memory aunts, Elsie Shaw Harrod and Henrietta McDonnell Motley; cousins who were like aunts and uncles, Dorothy Lenoir Gibson, Mamie Lenior Woodard, and James Howard Lenoir; sister, Deborah McDonnell Frazier; brothers, Charles Calvin McDonnell, Jr. (Julia) and Alfred H. McDonnell (Rhonda); nieces, Simone Frazier Rucker and Myranda McDonnell Myers (Rashad); nephews Shawn L. Frazier (Angela) , Duriel Scott McDonnell (Janell), Lanse Shelbert Ballard (Miranda), and Calvin T. McDonnell; great-nieces, Janea McDonnell, Jaylah McDonnell, Justice Rucker, Ava Noel Crouch, Riley Amina Nichole Rucker, Laila Isabelle Ballard, Londyn D. Myers, Autumn Montgomery, Lilyanna D. Myers; great-nephews, Jalen Micah Frazier, Juwaun Xavier Ballard , Nicholas Landon Ballard, Jaylin D. Griffith, and a host of other family and friends.
The family will greet friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Monday, the 31st of July, 2023 in the Chapel of Forest Lawn West Funeral & Cremation Service. A service to celebrate her life will follow at 2:00 PM.
