She was born Constance Anne Allen in Barre, Vermont on June 12, 1931 to Loren and Garnet Allen. She, with her brother, Robert Allen, grew up in Barre where she graduated from Spaulding High School in 1949.
In 1952, she became engaged to Alfred Adolfo Calcagni. While he served in the military in Korea, she attended Skidmore College and graduated in 1953. Upon his return from military service, they were married on June 27, 1953 and would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary in a few days.
From 1953 until 1957, they lived in Philadelphia, where she worked at the University of Pennsylvania’s graduate school while her husband earned his Master’s Degree. In 1958, they moved to Baltimore, MD where their son, Robert, was born. In 1960, they moved to South Burlington, VT, where Alfred set up his architectural practice. Here their son, John, was born in 1960. In 1978, they moved to Charlotte where she lived until her passing.
Connie is survived by her husband, Alfred Calcagni; her sons, Robert Calcagni and his wife Cindy, and John Calcagni; grandson, Nathan Calcagni; granddaughter, Natalie Calcagni; nephews, Gary Allen, Burnie Allen, Paul Allen, Tom Allen, Steven Allen, Dean Calcagni and Tom Calcagni; and niece, Sally Muscarella; as well has her beloved cats, Sparky and Katie.
Connie was truly a dedicated and loving mother to her family. She lived her life for God, for church, for family and for friends. She supported many charities and was involved in many ministries including Friendship Trays, delivering meals to seniors, working the front desk at her church, Providence United Methodist, attending Sunday school, where she wrote hundreds of cards to fellow church members in need of support and fellowship, and the landscaping ministry which allowed her to be involved in gardening, a lifelong passion that she could no longer perform physically.
In her final days, despite continual and severe pain, she never complained and was only concerned with her family’s wellbeing. No words can come close to how much she will be missed. We love you, Mom.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 13th at Providence United Methodist Church. Her family will receive friends at the church following the service.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to her church, which she loved so much – Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC 28211 (www.providenceumc.org).
