Daisy (Dee) Giles Fogelson was born on July 10, 1927, in Sampson County NC, to Frederick Preston and Molly Lee Giles. Daisy, the 5th daughter born to Frederick and Molly, joined her siblings, Hugh, her one and only brother, Mabel, Wilma, Mildred, and Aileen. Three years later Rebecca was born to complete the Giles family.
Daisy's love of fashion started at a young age with her first job at The Capitol Department Store in downtown Fayetteville. It was there Daisy would meet the love of her life, a handsome, high-end dress salesman whose client was The Capitol Department Store. Whether it was her sense of style or her infectious laugh that attracted Joseph Marcus Fogelson, we cannot know. Joe, born in Brooklyn New York, lived in Charlotte and was the son of Isador and Hortense Fogelson. Neither distance nor religion could keep them apart and they were married on March 27, 1960. Shortly thereafter, Daisy’s second love was born, her son, Mark Elliot Fogelson. Daisy, Joe, and Mark enjoyed family time together, especially the many visits from Daisy and Joe’s families.
Sadly, Joe passed away in 1969. Devasted and with an 8-year-old to raise, Daisy’s fortitude overtook her grief, and Daisy and Mark began to help each other. Daisy depended on Mark and Mark on Daisy. Daisy often said God gave her a strong back because He knew she would need it. Yet no matter how hard things became, you would never know it. Daisy simply did not complain. She took everything in stride and depended strongly on her faith.
Throughout the years, Daisy continued to share her style secrets with the women of Charlotte as she worked in the retail fashion industry with Belk, Ivey’s, Macy’s and Dillard’s. After all, it’s not every day you see someone who looks like she stepped off the pages of Vogue magazine. Everywhere Daisy went she saw a friend, someone she knew, or someone she was about to know. Whether in retail or on the street, people were attracted to Daisy because of her wonderful and uplifting attitude along with her sophisticated demeanor. But then again, she could cut loose and laugh with the best of them. She loved a good story, both to tell and to hear. Nothing made her happier than spending time with family.
She enjoyed cooking and the beach. She loved chocolate, bananas, and sweet potatoes. But not all together. And the one time you could guarantee she’d be glued to the TV was during the Perry Como show!
For all of those things, she will be fondly remembered. But no remembrance of Daisy will be complete without the mention of her red lipstick which she meticulously donned every day. Daisy invented the dab long before Cam Newton! Dab by dab for what seemed like 10 minutes she would apply her red lips. You would come closer to catching her in her pajamas than catching her without her lipstick.
Many will say, she lived a good long life. And that is true. But to those of us who will miss her, we wish it were longer. Daisy was committed into the hands of the Lord, on January 25, 2024, with Mark by her side. She had grown weary and told us often she was ready to go home. Daisy is survived by her only son, Mark, of Charlotte, her younger sister Rebecca Joyce of Gloucester Va., and many nieces, and nephews who loved her well. She will be missed.
The Celebration of Life ceremony and interment will take place at the Hebrew Cemetery at noon on February 4. 2024. Daisy’s family wishes to thank, Sandra Goldman and Jewish Family Service for their assistance during this time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Jewish Federation
