

Charlotte, NC - Daniel Thomas Canavan, 88, retired Vice-President of The Bank of New York and the Emergency Service of the New York City Police Department, passed away Saturday evening, May 3, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.
A Mass of Catholic Burial is planned for 10:00 am Tuesday, May 13th 2014 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church with Father Christopher Riehl as Celebrant. Friends may visit one hour prior to the mass at the church, 1400 Suther Road, Charlotte, NC. The burial will take place on May 15th 2014 in Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY where a Catholic Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am in the chapel. Friends may visit one hour prior to the mass at the chapel.
A strong patriot and proud American, Dan served as a Corporal with the U.S. Marine Corp., during WWII. His family has requested that contributions in his memory be made to: St. Jude Research Hospital for Children Memorial Daniel T. Canavan, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN, 38105.
The youngest of 10 children, Dan was born August 23, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Thomas and Catherine Flood Canavan.
A devout Catholic, Dan was honored to serve as a Eucharistic Minister at Incarnation Church in Hollis, New York, Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Malvern, New York, Prince of Peace Ormond Beach, FL and St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Charlotte, NC where he also participated in Young at Heart and volunteered at the Laurels. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 1013 Club of Northeast Florida, was a volunteer teacher of reading, a Blue Boy at Memorial Hospital in Ormond Beach, Florida and a volunteer at Mercy Hospital in New York. At Incarnation Church he served as president of the Church Council and of the PTA, he was also a basketball official and started the Teen Club.
In addition to his parents and 9 siblings, Dan was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Francis Canavan. His beloved wife, Ann Chapple Canavan, whom he married May 8, 1948, survives at home. Other survivors include his 4 Children, Sharon A. Fenlon and husband John of Charlotte, NC, Daniel T. Canavan Jr and wife Linda of Clinton, NJ, Theresa M. Canavan of Charlotte, NC and Timothy P. Canavan and wife Eileen of Newnan, Ga; 8 grandchildren, Matthew T. Fenlon, Deirdre C. Mullican, Daniel T. Canavan III, Megan E. Nicholas, Ryan J. Canavan, Kathryn A. Brown, Morgan J. Canavan and Shawn P. Canavan along with 14 great grandchildren.
