Just seeing this as I was visiting memory lane in Durham, NC. In 1988, Doc's mail was  mistakenly delivered to my apartment 2 doors away.  What a delight to return to it's "owner" and lo and behold there was a small "spark". I have fond memories of a few dates, including meeting his parents. Oh to return to our youth.

Such a shock to stumble across the news of young Doc Thurston's premature death. We met him only once, on a visit to the museum in Charlotte, when he must have been somewhere around 10 years old. He was a socially precocious and outgoing person who made an indelible impression even then. Shortly afterward we moved from Sapphire Valley in Western North Carolina to Washington DC to work on Capitol Hill. But whenever we saw a Thurston truck on the road we were reminded of the alert young man with such an engaging demeanor. My husband also is an NRA life member and active in Safari Club International, taking thousands of pairs of shoes to orphanages and medicines to clinics across sub-Saharan Africa. He is active in Ducks Unlimited, a private pilot, and a former PGA touring pro. It seems that Doc grew to be an amazing man with links in all of these activities. How we never crossed paths again is a mystery. Our daughter now teaches history at Duke Divinity School. Such synchronicity. Absent from the body. Present with the Lord. Rest well, Doc. You will live on in our memory.

I was saddened to hear of Doc's passing. We spent many hours talking of guns. Doc so enjoyed sharing his knowledge with my son,I will miss our conversations

I got to know Doc a little by talking to him on the phone sometimes for hours after he purchased a gun from me.  I grew to really love the man without having ever met him in person. What a great human being from everything I could tell in the hours we spent talking.  I cannot stand the thought that I did not get to know him better.  His Mother seemed like a wonderful woman too and I want her to know how much I appreciated her son, their kindness, and decency. I will write her personally and try to visit someday.

I just learned of Doc's passing.  I first met him through his parents and their love of SCI.  His parents and mine became good friends and I dated Doc Jr.for awhile.  He was a kind, loving soul and it saddens me to hear that he no longer graces us on earth. Doc, you are now on your greatest safari.  May God watch over you.

Doc will be truly missed among the collectors of the world. Our condolences to the family.

Sincere condolences for Doc's family and many friends. I met Doc about 10 years or so ago and became his IT support tech.  We became great friends and shared a love for computers, technology, video production, guns, music and guitars.  I will miss him so much.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Thurston family at this time.  I met Doc during my Freshman year at UNC Chapel Hill.  We both lived in Granville Towers on 2nd floor West.  Doc was a truly unique individual that reached out to everyone.  He made his hall mates feel welcome and introduced us to Apple computers, baby leopards, and having a good time.  Doc will be missed.

My deepest sympathy goes to the family and friends of Doc - I am thankful to have become his friend and that I was asked to visit and talk with him - I am so sorry and heartsick about his passing and will never forget him

Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.

I am so sorry to hear of Doc's passing.  I have so many fond memories of our college years in Chapel Hill.  My prayers are with his family and friends.

Doc was the best man at my wedding. He was not only a friend but a kindred spirit. He was like a brother to me and so wished we could have spent more time together. He will be greatly missed and so sad that we did not get the chance to collaborate on projects. There was so much to be done and achieve.
Doc will always remain inside our hearts and I feel greatly for all his family and friends.

today my good friend, i heart about your passing... only a couple of weeks ago we were talking and made a plan/pact to see each other again. Now you are gone, undertaking your new journey to another side. God I miss you my friend. However, I will visit your resting place, whenever that may be, and I shall hold you to our promise made during that last comms.
My friend travel safely and god speed. I shall miss you to my end of days.  We shall meet again.
