With heavy hearts but confident in his reward, we sadly announce the death of Don Roberson, who is now before his Lord Jesus with his bride, Kay. Born May 29, 1932, George Donald Roberson passed away on December 22, 2024, having fought the good fight and finishing the course God gave him.
Don grew up in Alabama and Florida as the younger of two boys in a loving, Christian family. He considered his childhood and youth idyllic, full of family, friends, the beach, and school. Although he considered going into ministry briefly, he knew his calling was medicine after his first classes at Duke University. Upon graduating in 1954 he went on to The Medical College of Virginia where he studied otorhinolaryngology but more importantly, he met Kay. They were married the week after they both graduated in 1958, and combining a honeymoon with his Florida Board exams, headed to the University of Alabama for his ENT Residency. Don then joined the Army Medical Corps as a captain 1962 and served at Fort Knox, KY.
In 1964, Don and Kay decided to raise their family in Charlotte, NC, and shortly afterward, Don opened Randolph Road ENT with Dr. John Foust, practicing there his whole career with other devoted partners. They were a wonderful family of physicians, nurses and staff who truly cared for their patients and each other. Kay and Don were also instrumental in founding Charlotte Latin School in 1970 and The Church at Charlotte in 1973. These groups allowed Don the opportunity to touch and impact many people, to be the hands and feet of Jesus, to live every day with a smile and positive attitude; there was simply no one else like him.
There was one other group of people even more blessed for knowing him and that was his family. Don was besotted with the love of his life, Kay, spoiling her and caring for her tenderly every day since they met. He gave his children, Charles and Donna, the roots and wings they needed with unconditional love and support. And he adored in his grandchildren who were perfect in his eyes.
Don is predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Kay Roberson, who passed away November 27 of this same year. He is survived by their two children: Charlie Roberson (Kim) of Huntsville, AL and Donna Willis (Chuck) of Charlotte, NC. Four grandchildren lovingly called him PopDoc; Chase Roberson and Alex Roberson of Huntsville, AL, Charlie Willis of Raleigh, NC and Hunter Willis Roach (Aaron) of Louisville, KY.
A service celebrating Don’s life will be held at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park on Saturday, January 4th at 2pm with the burial to follow. If you wish to honor Don with a memorial gift, he supported the work of JAARS, Samaritan’s Purse, and Gethsemane International, Inc. of Knoxville, TN.
