It is with deep love and profound gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Donald (Don) Franklin Markle a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grand father, veteran, and faithful servant of God.
Don was married to the love of his life, Patricia (Pat), for nearly 70 years. Their marriage was a beautiful testimony of commitment, faith, and enduring love. Together they built a strong and loving family that was always the center of his world.
He was the proud and loving father of four children: Kim Markle (wife Cindy), Kina Markle, Kristy Detwiler (husband Jeff), and Korey Markle (wife Wendy). His legacy continues through his six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
Don faithfully served his country in the United States Navy for 23 years, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Much of his naval career in nuclear engineering was spent in Virginia, where he dedicated himself to leadership and served with honor and discipline. Using his nuclear engineering knowledge he went on to work for Duke Power for twenty years.
A devoted Catholic, Don’s faith guided every part of his life. He served as an altar boy in his youth and as a choir director later in life, where his lifelong love of music shined.
He was also a talented artist gifted with creativity, he was always there to lend a helping hand for any project big or small. He taught his sons how to dismantle and rebuild a car engine; as they followed in his footsteps they also became Jack of all Trades like their father.
Above all, Don loved his family more than anything. If family came first, golf was a close second. The golf course was one of his favorite places – a place of camaraderie, challenge and enjoyment – but it never rivaled the deep love he held for those at home.
He will be remembered for his strength, his unwavering faith, his steady leadership, and the deep love he poured into his wife and family. His life was one of service – to his country, to his church, and most importantly, to those he loved.
His presence was a blessing. His memory is a treasure, His love will remain with us always.
The family will hold a private celebration of life at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
