Doris Culp Abernathy

She graduated from Charlotte Central High School in 1950 and Mars Hill Junior College where she met her future husband, Harold Abernathy. They were married in 1955. He predeceased her in 1999. She worked for Commercial National Bank until they started a family. She went back to work in 1977 for Industrial Insurance Corporation which later merged with McNeary Insurance Consulting from which she retired in 1997.

She was a member of St. Paul Presbyterian Church for over ten years where she sang in the choir. The family later transferred to Sardis Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir until she was in her eighties. She was also active in the Women of the Church groups for a number of years. She enjoyed her Bridge Clubs for many years.

She lived in the Sardis Road area for 43 years and moved to Matthews Glen in 2012.

She is survived by her daughter Janet Abernathy Coleman (Frank) of Irvine, CA and daughter-in-law Cynthia Abernathy of Indian Land, SC. She is also survived by her grandchildren Laura Coleman Wright (Andrew) of Atlanta, GA and their children Lucas and Morgan Wright; Grant Coleman, Steve Coleman, and Ashley Coleman all of Charlotte, NC; and step grandson Andy Benton of Indian Land, SC and his children. She was predeceased by her husband Harold and sons Donald and Paul. She was also predeceased by brothers Ralph and Ned, half-brothers Fletcher, Jr. and George, and half-sisters Nancy McCall and Mary DeVries.

A memorial service to celebrate Doris’s life will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 1:00 PM in the Sardis Presbyterian Church Sanctuary.
