Doris was born on August 4, 1930 in Charlotte to the late Clarence Andrew Freeman and Allie Jeanette Jones.
Raised with her three siblings in Charlotte, Doris attended public schools and graduated from Berryhill High School with the class of 1948. That same year, she married her lifelong love, Charlie Webb Jr., whom she’d been introduced to by a mutual friend.
Doris and Charlie went on to start their own family, and Doris spent many years as a homemaker and stay at home mother. She truly thrived in that role and that was in part due to her expert skill at cooking, sewing, crocheting, and tending to the yard. She made clothes for all her children, clothes for their babydolls, curtains and placemats for the home, and so many other things; she was so committed to doing things well and right that her sewing projects often looked better than a store-bought version. Doris also regularly crocheted afghans to gift to friend and family, and just like everything else, they were always made perfectly.
At home, Doris cooked almost every meal the family ate and she was excellent at that as well. Her children particularly enjoyed her meatloaf, vegetable soup, and biscuits, and Charlie’s favorite was her pecan pie. As one of the few people who was both a great cook and great baker, she made each of her family members’ favorite cake for their birthdays – whatever they wanted, they got, and the cakes were always homemade.
Thoughtful and generous by nature, Doris often bestowed friends, coworkers, and church family with treats as well. She would often bake something sweet and take it to the church staff just because. Her inherent compassion also led her to drive for Meals on Wheels, which she did every week for many years. She truly just loved helping others and doing nice things for them.
When Doris was in her 40s, she went to work as a Secretary at Enderly Park Baptist Church (now known as University Hills Baptist Church), where she was employed for over two decades until her retirement in 1998. Over the years, Doris
attended a few different churches, frequently participating in the church choir, but after the family relocated to Lake Norman in the 1980s, Doris and Charlie became charter members of Denver Baptist Church.
Living by the lake was so special for Doris, who absolutely loved to be outside in the sun. When she was younger, she loved sunbathing at the beach, and later, she’d happily start projects just for an excuse to be outside, such as doing yard work or detailing her car. After their move to Denver, the family spent many happy days out on the boat and relaxing by the lake. When she couldn’t be outside in the sun, she was fond of working on jigsaw puzzles and word puzzles.
More than anything else in the world, though, Doris enjoyed herself most when she was spending time with her family. She was the most devoted mom, dedicating her whole life to supporting and caring for her children. Her glass-half-full, loving, kindhearted nature will be so dearly missed by all who knew her.
Those left to honor Doris’s memory include her children, Mary Barnette (Paul) and Timothy Webb; grandchildren, Sharon Barnette, Teresa Barnette, Michelle Barnette, Mark Barnette, Dana Potts, Shelby Simmons Webb, Joshua Webb, Kacee Thompson, and Brittany Webb; great-grandchildren, Andrew Tichenor, Josiah Webb, Keilah Webb, Aria Roark, Clayton Potts, and Aurora Thompson; as well as numerous special nieces and nephews, and other loving family members and friends.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Allie Freeman; beloved husband, Charlie Webb Jr.; children, Mark Webb and David Webb; siblings, Cecelia Yelton, Betty Canady, and Donald Freeman; and grandson, David Barnette.
