Mrs. Kirk, age 94, passed away Saturday, September 19, 2015. Born January 25, 1921 in Charlotte, she was a daughter of the late James Bennett and Elizabeth Markham Bennett. Mrs. Kirk was a homemaker and a member of Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church. She was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in Presbyterian Women for her service and devotion to the church.
She graduated from Newell High School and worked for a time at Bank of Commerce and Alexander Tank Company but left work to become a homemaker when their son, John, was born. She kept home cooking and preserving the food grown on the family farm. She also enjoyed needle point and cross stitch. She served as a Cub Scout leader, Sunday School teacher and cooked Brunswick stew for a number of years at the Mallard Creek Barbeque.
She became a volunteer at CMC University Hospital when that facility opened. Through the years she worked on the front desk as a greeter, delivered flowers and mail to patients and eventually worked in the pharmacy. She was named a volunteer of the year. She was celebrated for 25 years of service to the hospital. She also volunteered for the Red Cross doing disaster relief during earthquakes in California and flooding on the Mississippi.
She and her husband Gene loved to travel and did so for many years. They visited 6 of 7 continents and visited over 100 countries. They visited each of the world's 24 time zones. They made many lasting friendships from people all over the world on these journeys.
The family would like to thank the caregivers that stayed with her. Their attention and kindness made her life better.
The service to celebrate the life of Edith Bennett Kirk will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 23rd at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Wednesday at the church.
