Born September 10, 1919 in Yazoo County, Mississippi, she was the daughter of the late Charles Albert Langford and Margaret Carolyn Burns Langford. Edith grew up on the family farm and was one of eight children. Following high school graduation, Edith entered nursing school and after graduation enlisted into the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, achieving the rank of Captain.
During her military service (1944-1948), she met her future husband, Maj. General Thomas Murray Mayfield Sr, who at the time was a Colonel in the U.S. Army. Shortly before her marriage, Edith retired from the Nurse Corps and became a full time homemaker in Charlotte.
Initially living in a duplex located in the Eastover neighborhood, she and Murray subsequently built a house on Colville Road in Eastover, where they lived until their son David left for college. In the early 1950s, Edith and Murray purchased a house at Garden City Beach, SC where they both loved to spend time with family and friends, especially during off-season. Following their passion of being near the water, in 1971, Edith and Murray began construction on a new home on Lake Wylie in the new community of Tega Cay.
Murray continued to work in Charlotte and they both remained active in Myers Park Methodist Church. Following Murray’s death in 1979, Edith continued living in Tega Cay, pursuing her hobbies in ceramics, sewing and gardening. In 1998, Edith moved to a home in the historic district of Concord, NC so that she could be within walking distance of her son David and her grandchildren.
Edith lived in her Concord home, continuing her love of ceramics, sewing, gardening and international travel. In 2011, Edith moved to the Aldersgate Retirement Community. While at Aldersgate she developed many close friendships.
She is survived by her son, David Langford Mayfield and his wife Kelli Stevens of Concord, NC; grandson, Alexander Mayfield of Concord; granddaughters, Rebecca Mayfield of Somerville, MA, Jennie Mayfield of Paris, France and Kate Mayfield of Concord; stepsons, William Mayfield of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Edward Mayfield of Winston Salem, NC. Also surviving is her brother, Earl Langford of Balsam Grove, NC.
Mrs. Mayfield was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Murray Mayfield, Sr.; one brother, Carl Langford; sisters, Helen Kowaluk, Rachael Bard, Ruth Varnado, Julia Langford and Ethel Langford; as well as her stepson, Thomas Murray Mayfield, Jr.
A service to celebrate Edith’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Sharon Memorial Park “Mausoleum Chapel”. The Reverend Bill Roth of Myers Park United Methodist Church will be officiating.
