Mr. Beale, of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully on June 19, 2012 at Presbyterian Hospital due to complications following surgery. A loving husband, a dedicated stepfather and happy to be “pawpaw”, he was 69 years old.
Born in Danville, Virginia to the late Raymond Lacy Beale, Sr. and Mary McDowell Beale, Ed Beale lived a full life with shared joy from family and friends. After his early years working on the family farms he graduated from Virginia Tech with BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he taught at a community college, worked with the Corps of Engineers in Jacksonville, FL, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Atlanta, GA and Falls Church, VA.
After leaving the FAA, he opened an engineering consulting office for Delta Airport Consultants. Over his 30 plus year career with the firm he helped in its growth to over 80 employees in 6 offices. He was very proud of the firm’s growth and reputation.
While working with the FAA in Falls Church, VA, he met the love of his life, his wife Sylvia Ann Knight Beale. They were fortunate to share many “dream” vacations together, including the Caribbean, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Tahiti, and Russia. Theirs was a love of laughter, sharing and devotion.
Ed Beale is survived by his older brothers Raymond (Ray) Lacy Beale, Jr. of Chesterfield, VA and James Randolph (Randy) Beale of Danville, VA. They spent many a day on the Beale farms and would meet several times a year to recall old stories and enjoy Sylvia’s good cooking.
He is also survived by his stepdaughter Tonya Martin, her husband Mark and their children Cory, Courtney and Lauren. After a military career, the Martin family lives in the Raleigh/Fayetteville region of NC.
Ed Beale is further survived by his stepson Troy Burns, his wife Tammy, and their children Brett, Jared and Amber. Troy and Tammy both graduated from Virginia Tech and enjoyed Hokie football games with Ed and Sylvia plus the kids. Troy was like a true son to Ed and was a source of great pride. Ed claimed two traits in Troy’s development, his dedication to hard work and his sense of humor.
Ed enjoyed many hours on the golf course with friends and neighbors at Providence Country Club. Ed and Sylvia had a bit of a reputation for their dancing at club events.
A celebration of Ed Beale’s life will be held Saturday, June 23, 2012, at 1:00 pm at the McEwen Funeral Service – Pineville Chapel. Reverend Jim Lytle will officiate. The family will receive visitors from 12:00 to 1:00 pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your choice of charity.
