Edward “Mason” Smith Jr. of Charlotte, NC died on December 27, 2014. After a private funeral service, Mr. Smith was laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery, 461 Church Street North in Concord, NC, with full military honors. Mason was born in Greenville, SC, the son of the late Carrie West Smith and E.M. Smith. He attended (old) Central High School, King’s College and Wingate College. A Veteran of the U.S. Navy, Mason served during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific arena and was awarded four bronze battle stars. He retired from the Mill Power Supply Company, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, after 42 years of service. Mason was a member of the Chapel Bible Class. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, NC, Post 6480, the DAV Commander’s Club and was a lifetime Charter Member of the National World War II Memorial Society. Mason is survived by his wife, Helen F. Smith; and his brother, Dan C. Smith of Clinton, SC; several nieces and nephews.
