Doris Evelyn Russell White, age 95, passed away peacefully following a short period of declining health at Brookdale MacArthur Park in Cary, NC on Friday, September 22, 2017. She is preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Earl W. White; her parents, Grady Lane Russell, Sr. and Ida Jane House Russell; her brother, Grady Lane (“Bub”) Russell, Jr. (Ruby); and her sisters Ethel Greene Borek (Bobo) and Mary Russell. Evelyn is survived by her three children, Donald K. White (Sylvia) of Durham, NC, Barry L. White (Pamela) and Susan White Carter of Cary, NC; her grandchildren Dr. Brent C. White (Sarah), Briarly White Reed (Richard), Dalton W. Carter and E. Davis Carter; and her great-granddaughters Olivia W. White and Carson E. Reed.
Evelyn was a native and lifelong resident of Charlotte, NC until she moved to Cary, NC in 2016 to be near her children. She was a 1941 graduate of Charlotte Technical High School. She worked part-time with Russell Transfer/Storage Company, a long-time Charlotte moving and storage company established by her father and later owned and operated by her brother, Bub. But primarily Evelyn was a homemaker, devoted wife and loving mother. She took pride in raising her children and providing an open home to their extended family and friends.
Evelyn was a devoted Christian and life-long member of Belmont Park United Methodist Church, which later relocated and became University City United Methodist Church. Evelyn enjoyed working in the Church’s infant nursery on Sundays. Along with her sister-in-law, Ruby Russell, and life-long friend, Midge Shu, she was also active in various church fundraising and service projects, such as the Sew and Sew Group. Evelyn delighted in making herself useful and supportive of others in any way possible. She also found joy in the hobby of growing and tending to seasonal flowers. Her most recently stated motto was “Live in the moment”. She will continue to be cherished as a loving, humble, generous-spirited lady who genuinely brightened the lives of all around her.
A Graveside Service will be private. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make contributions to University City United Methodist Church (Infant Nursery), 3835 West W.T. Harris Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28269-3500.
Arrangements are under the care of McEwen Funeral Service. Online condolences can be shared at www.mcewenfs.com or mailed to Barry at 636 Lipford Drive, Cary, NC 27519-7072.
