

She was born April 29, 1928 in Columbus, Ga., to the late McDuffie and Ivy Thompson, and she graduated from the University of Alabama in 1949. That year, she married James Henry Nichols Jr. After moving throughout the southeast, they settled in Charlotte in 1964.
Frances taught preschool at Sharon Presbyterian Church for more than two decades. She was a charter member of Sharon United Methodist Church, where she worshipped for 50 years, and was an active member of the McWhorter Sunday School class.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, McDuffie Thompson Jr., and Robert T. Thompson; and her husband, Henry.
Frances is survived by her children, James Henry Nichols III (Etsuko), Robert McDuffie Nichols (Nancy), Nancy Nichols Holland, and Mary Nichols Rhew (David); her grandchildren, Patrick Nichols (Lizz), Andrew Nichols (Dominique), Adam Rhew, Alex Holland, Elizabeth Rhew Cooper (Will), Elaine Holland, and Caroline Nichols; and one great-granddaughter, Lillian Nichols. She was excited to meet her second great-granddaughter, Eleanor Cooper, due in September.
A celebration of Frances’ life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 22, at Sharon United Methodist Church in Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Frances’ name to Sharon UMC or to Hospice & Palliative Care-Charlotte Region.
