Doug was born on September 16, 1945, to June Edith Thompson and Frank Dale Hunter in Highland, IL.
He married his beloved Sandi on February 23, 1974, and they had one child, Carisa, who is married to Frank Hinson, who was an incredible son-in-law and friend of Doug.
Doug is survived by his devoted spouse of 50 years, Sandi; his child - Carisa (husband, Frank), three grandchildren - Paxton, Kyler, & Lili; and his sister, Patricia Bond.
His career at IBM began in 1967 and he retired in 1999. After retirement he spent his time golfing, serving the church, spending time with family, riding his Harley, and watching sports. His family was the most important, and he took them on many cruises over the years, which have provided the best memories.
Doug was a member of Matthews United Methodist Church, where he led the Food Pantry for 17 years and was also an usher. He was a member of the Parousia Sunday School class where he had many wonderful friends. Many of Doug’s best memories were made traveling to Guatemala on mission trips with other friends from MUMC.
Celebration of Life service will be at 11 am, Saturday, July 20, 2024, at McEwen Funeral Home, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210. If you are planning to attend the service, we ask that you dress as if we are all going to a casual dinner on a cruise together (polo shirts, sundresses, whatever you are comfortable in during the summer) because that’s where our best family memories were made. Doug would want all those he loved the most on a cruise together so let’s celebrate him that way!
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Doug Hunter Memorial Scholarship Fund at Greenville University, Doug’s Alma Mater and the college his grandson, Kyler, will be attending in the fall. Doug grew up in Greenville, IL, attended college there, and was overjoyed to know his grandson would be attending in the fall. His family set up a scholarship fund in his honor to celebrate his legacy, both in the town of Greenville and at the University.
