On December 18, 2022, God called Frank to his heavenly home where he is now rejoicing with his mother, father, sister, brother, and other loved ones, free of the pain and suffering he endured during the last years of his life.
Frank was born on April 18, 1933, in Charlotte, N.C. to Frank Davis Johnston, Sr. and Iska Garrett Johnston. He graduated from Central High School in 1951 and from the Citadel in 1955 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He served in the United States Air Force for several years where he completed Flight Training and was honorably discharged with the rank of Second Lieutenant.
Frank enjoyed fishing at his family’s home on Lake Wylie. He also enjoyed woodworking and antiquing. Never one to sit still, at 62 years old, Frank built a woodworking shop in his back yard where he spent many enjoyable hours on numerous challenging projects. He was also an excellent cook and he created many delicious recipes to the delight of his family. He adored his dachshunds and owned at least one throughout his adult life.
Frank was a kind, loving, humble man who was loved by many. He was Christian man who accepted Jesus as his Savior. His bible was always close by and he read it often.
Frank is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Paulette King Johnston. He is also survived by his three children Lynda Santoni (Jerry), Bill Johnston (Melinda), and Paige Hauff (Rob); grandchildren Jessica Corrigan, Mallory Forsman (Carl), Clayton Johnston (Lauren), Nick Santoni, Chris Santoni, Olivia Hauff, and Vivian Hauff; great-grandchildren Lila and Violet Corrigan, and Dale and Henry Forsman.
Frank’s sister-in-law, Pamela King Sawyer, always described Frank as “an officer and a gentleman,” powerful words that perfectly sum up the life of this amazing man who will be greatly missed.
A service to honor Frank’s life will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Midwood Baptist Church, 2029 Mecklenburg Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28205. Visitation will start at 12 noon. Private burial to follow the service at Elmwood Cemetery.
