Gloria Mary Beckmann Hatfield

Mrs. Hatfield, 86, passed away on Thursday, January 30 at the Harris Hospice Unit at Presbyterian Main. She was born in Ferdinand, IN on June 15, 1927 to the late Edward J. and Gladys L. (Hail) Beckmann. Gloria grew up in Jasper, IN and graduated from Jasper High School in 1945.

She graduated from the Indiana School of Pharmacy (now Butler University) in 1949.

She then worked at Eli Lilly & Co. in Indianapolis as an analytical chemist, completing nitrogen determinations on unknown organic compounds.

She married L. Shirl Hatfield, Jr. on August 30, 1958 and they made their home in Indianapolis. After she raised her family she returned to community pharmacy on a part time basis. She relocated to Charlotte in 2008. Gloria was a devoted and much loved wife, mother and grandmother. She was passionate about her family and was very proud of her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, L. Shirl, in 2004, as well as her parents and one brother, Marcus John Beckmann.

She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Sara Hatfield Steelman (Peter) of Charlotte, NC and a son, Dr. Mark Hatfield (Jan), of Columbus, IN. In addition, she leaves behind four grandsons: Grant, Trent and Kurt Steelman and Zachary Hatfield.

The family will receive friends on Saturday February 1, 2014 from 2 pm to 4 pm at McEwen Pineville Chapel. 10500 Park Rd. Charlotte, NC 28210. Services and interment will be held in Indianapolis at a later date.

The family would like to thank the staff at White Oak of Waxhaw for their loving care of Gloria.
