

Gordon Mayzik was a modest man, quiet and observant in his ways. He was trustworthy and traditional in his approach to his life and in his relationships. He was tough-minded with the kind of “stick to it” attitude that earned the respect of all who knew him. He was also a man who was meticulous, carefully disciplined, and orderly in virtually everything he undertook. Realistic about life, he was always at the ready, prepared to take on responsibility.
Gordon was born on November 7, 1929 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was the son of Henry and Lillian Chmielewski Mayzik. Gordon grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Gordon was raised with 2 siblings. He had one brother named Kenneth Mayzik and one sister named Arleen Stork. Gordon was usually involved in all sorts of activities with his siblings. He and his siblings experienced rivalries typical of a growing family, but they shared many life experiences over the years.
A typical teenager, Gordon had a fairly happy high school experience, making that critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. He graduated from Rufus King High School in 1948. He enjoyed some classes more than others, having favorite subjects and teachers.
On August 17, 1990 Gordon exchanged wedding vows with Ruth "Carolyn" Williams Mayzik at Register of Deeds of Rock Hill, South Carolina. Empathic and loyal, Gordon was committed to making his new family happy.
Fortunately, Gordon enjoyed what he did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, Gordon worked diligently and did his best to succeed in his career. His primary occupation was a Chef. He was employed for Florence Crittenton Services, and for Providence Baptist Church for many years. Gordon always sought to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done.
Gordon was an Army Veteran. He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. Through his hard work, he achieved the rank of Corporal. He received several awards recognizing him for his service, including a National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. His fellow soldiers viewed him as a brother in arms and knew that he was as much a part of their family as their loved ones back home.
Gordon was a man who took pride in upholding his beliefs. So it is little wonder that he took an active role in his community, serving on committees for Meals on wheels and Big Brothers.
Gordon enjoyed traveling and time away on vacations. It was a chance for him to renew and relax, to visit new places and experience new things. His favorite vacation was the time that he traveld to Canada by motorhome and by train.
Gordon was a lover of animals and cherished his pets. One of his favorites was Mickey, a poodle. They were best friends for 12 years.
When Gordon’s retirement finally arrived in 2004, he was well prepared. His new life involved relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina. Even in retirement, Gordon continued to stay in touch with his old friends while making plenty of new acquaintances. Gordon was active in his new community and felt fulfilled with the opportunities retirement offered him.
Gordon passed away on September 2, 2010 at Sardis Oaks Nursing Home in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Carolyn Williams Mayzik; his brother, Kenneth Mayzik and his sister Arleen Stork, both of Franklin, WI. Services were held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, September 8, 2010 in the chapel of McEwen Funeral Service - Derita.
Simply stated, Gordon was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by his family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Gordon leaves behind him a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life he touched will always remember Gordon Mayzik.
