Hurley Smith Helms Jr.

.Mr. Helms, age 86 of Santee, SC formerly of Charlotte, passed away August 21, 2014 at Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, SC. He was born in Charlotte on October 7, 1927 son of the late Hurley Smith Helms, Sr. and Alma Garland Helms, in addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jimmy Smith Helms and Joe Edwin Helms. Mr. Helms was an avid golfer, fisherman, gardener, U. S. Navy veteran and worked for Union Carbide Corp. for 41 years in Charlotte, NC, Rocky River, OH, Wayne, NJ and East Hartford, CT. He married his devoted wife of 64 years, in Charlotte, NC Georgia Vivian Barbee on December 17, 1949. The family will receive friends starting at 1:00 P. M. Monday August 25, 2014 at McEwen Funeral Service Charlotte Chapel 5716 Monroe Road Charlotte, NC 28212 with a service to follow at 2:00 P. M. in the funeral home chapel. Entombment will be at Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum. Hurley is survived by his wife Georgia Vivian Barbee Helms of Santee, SC, sister LaVerne Helms Sizemore of Charlotte, daughter, Karen Helms Leach and husband Thomas William Leach of NJ, two sons, Douglas Eric Helms and wife Shirley Newton Helms of NM, Bradley Clayton Helms of NM, four adoring grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society 1901 Brunswick, Avenue Charlotte, NC 28207.
