

He was born July 25, 1934 in Orangeburg, SC and was the only child of the late Harvey C. and Ruby Smith Mobley. Jack graduated from Orangeburg High School and then from the University of South Carolina, earning a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering. While in college, he was a member of the Air Force ROTC, Civil Engineers Club and Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. After graduation, he worked with AT&T, the South Carolina Highway Department, Factory Mutual Engineering Division, and ultimately retired from Marsh McLellan as a Fire Protection Engineer and Vice President. As a member of the Army Reserve, he was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis and served for one year.
Jack was a registered Professional Engineer in North and South Carolina. He was a founding member of the local chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and participated in forming the local USC Gamecocks Club. He also officiated high school football and baseball for twenty years, and served as an usher at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
On October 5, 1957 he married the love of his life, the former Barbara Martschink of Charleston, SC. They enjoyed Gamecocks sports, travel and recently celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Jack is survived by his wife, two wonderful children, Michael Mobley and wife Shelley of Charlotte, and daughter Debbie Fields and husband Jon of Fort Hill, SC, grandchildren David Mobley and wife Lauren, John Mobley, and Cameron Fields, and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Charlotte, NC. Burial will be 3:00 PM Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Bethany Cemetery located in Charleston, SC.
The family wishes to thank Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster and his private nurse Ms. Toni Galloway for Jack’s care during his final days.
