

Mr. Helms, 81, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on April 24, 2011 at CMC-Main. He was born on July 5, 1929 in Charlotte, a son of the late James Henry Helms, Sr. and Francis Oats Helms.
He was a graduate of Harding High School and Wingate University. Mr. Helms went on to have a successful career as a Cost Accountant for the Defense Industry.
He was most proud however of his 35 years as a professional musician; playing drums, piano, trumpet and harmonica. He played for the Ziggy Horowitz Band for many years.
Alcoholics Anonymous has been his passion for the last 20 years of his life, assisting at any chance he had to aid with their cause.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Carolyn Stroupe Helms; his son, James H. Helms, Jr. and daughter, Kim Yvonne Combs; and a very large and extended family at AA.
The service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Harry & Bryant Company, “Chapel in the Oaks”, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte, with the Reverend John Cleghorn officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-1:45 prior to the service at the funeral home.
