

When James Stanley Phipps, Sr., 86, reported into heaven last Saturday morning, he did so with a lifetime of good deeds and few regrets. He was a humble man of faith, a master carpenter, a devoted husband and father, and a patriot spending 28 years serving on active duty and in the Army National Guard.
At his side when he died from pneumonia was his beloved Reba, his wife of 61 years. He is also survived by three sons, James S. Phipps Jr., (wife Janice), Paul L. Phipps (wife Rhonda) and Mark W. Phipps (wife Terri); seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren plus two on the way.
Mr. Phipps was born in McColl, SC to the late Erby and Julia Phipps.
He moved to Charlotte in 1953 after fighting in the Korean War with the 5th Regimental Combat Team and earning the Combat Infantry Badge. In 1963, he joined a National Guard Special Forces unit in Charlotte where he was awarded paratrooper wings and earned the coveted Green Beret. He also served in the 105th Engineer Battalion and 30th Engineer Brigade where he served until retiring as a Staff Sergeant.
Mr. Phipps was also active with the Boy Scouts for many years and served as a deacon at Hillcrest Baptist Church. He was a long time member of the Paw Creek American Legion Post.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5 PM until 7 PM at Forest Lawn West Funeral & Cremation Service, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. A service to celebrate the life of James Stanley Phipps, Sr., will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 8501 Belhaven Boulevard. Internment with military honors will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
