After an extended illness, Jim passed away peacefully, on Monday, July 18, 2022, at Atrium Pineville. His loving companion, Pat Jarvis, had been at his side during his final earthy days, reading and praying with him.
Born in Browder County, Florida, September 29, 1944, Jim moved to Charlotte, NC in 1968, where he had a long and illustrious career, doing what he loved and cherished, restoring antique clocks. One of his greatest accomplishments was the restoration and maintenance of the extensive clock collection at the Biltmore House, Asheville, NC. He also had a passion for tower clocks, having restored numerous local City/Town Hall clocks and college campus clocks. Jim’s knowledge, expertise and understanding of clocks was beyond compare; he was a master horologist and clockmaker.
He was a proud Veteran having been in the US Army during the Cuban missile crisis. He likes to tell the story of a Miami boy, never having seen snow, being stationed in Buffalo, New York for two winters.
When not working on clocks, Jim thoroughly enjoyed spending time at Lake Lure, NC sitting on the porch overlooking the lake, enjoying a glass of wine with Pat and listening to his favorite beach music. He also enjoyed a leisurely spin around the resort on the “Go Buggy”. Grilling on the big boy grill was another favorite pastime for Jim, and oh, what a chef he was – well known by those fortunate enough to enjoy his impeccably prepared delicious meals and delicacies.
Jim will be greatly missed by his life-companion, Pat Jarvis and her daughter, Mandi. Jim is survived by his four children, Tara Fayad, Valencia VanOrsdel, Cameron VanOrsdel, and William VanOrsdel, and his three grandchildren, Maya Fayad, Alicia and Daryl Deardorff. He also leaves behind many great friends to cherish his memory.
Without a doubt, Jim is now resting in peace and most assuredly keeping all the heavenly clocks ticking blissfully away.
A private gathering will be planned to honor Jim.
