Jane Elizabeth (née Stetson) Maguire of Charlotte, NC, and Peaks Island, ME, aged 85, died June 16, 2025, in Charlotte, NC, after a period of illness. Jane was born on September 15, 1939, to Morgan Andrew and Alice (née McLean) Stetson. She grew up with her sister, Susan, in Weymouth, MA. Jane married Richard Arthur Maguire in Weymouth on July 13, 1963, and they raised their family in Burlington and Lexington, MA. She is survived by her husband Dick; by her daughter Joanne Maguire; by her grandsons Liam and Spencer Robinson and their partners, Morgan Mastrianni and Eszter Bánó; and by her nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Jane was predeceased by her sister, Susan, and her daughter, Kathleen.
Jane received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Bridgewater State College in 1961. She taught in Weymouth and New Jersey before taking time off to be a stay-at-home mother. She returned to work as a substitute and assistant teacher before finding her calling as a middle school English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in Lexington, MA. She was especially adept at providing a safe space for teenagers new to the United States. She loved and kept in touch with many of her students from those years. She also worked for several years at Cary Memorial Library in Lexington where she had the pleasure of being correct about things in her role as a reference librarian.
Jane enjoyed word games of all sorts; jigsaw puzzles; bridge and mahjongg; spending too much time on Facebook; correcting grammar errors and critiquing fashion choices; keeping up with the news; gahdening; and avoiding housework because there were better things to do. She especially loved spending whatever time she could with her beloved grandsons, both of whom did so much to make her proud and make her laugh. Dick and Jane traveled the world during their 61 years of marriage, including trips to Alaska and Hawaii, China, Japan, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Costa Rica, Russia, as well as several trips to many countries in western and eastern Europe. They also enjoyed many wonderful decades at Dick and Jane Sea Spot on Peaks Island.
Family and friends will gather to remember Jane on Peaks Island on August 9 at 3:00 pm. If you plan to join us, we have some parking and ferry information available here: https://tinyurl.com/mry4a84k
