Jesse Baxter "Sonny" Greene Jr. passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2021. He spent his last day doing what he loved most, flyfishing with his son, David and grandson Tyler. Sonny was born to Jesse Greene Sr. and Mary Helms on December 20, 1945.
Sonny most recently worked at Madison River Flyfishing Outfitters with owner and friend Ryan Wilson and Jim Smalley. Many grew knowledge and benefitted from his teachings of flyfishing which spanned over several decades.
Into his seventies, Sonny maintained a busy guide schedule through the shop, on top of having his own clientele. He was extremely generous and knowledgeable and was eager to share his experiences with beginners as well as advanced anglers. Sonny worked as both a guide and a representative for some of the top brands in the industry, including Winston, Sage and Frog’s Hair. He taught and mentored his step son, Captain Ruben Garza, Jr. where he went on to carry his legacy into his business, Snookdude Charters, LLC.
Sonny is preceded in death by his father Jesse Baxter Greene Sr. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Gloria Greene; mother Mary Helms Greene; daughter Jennifer Greene Hawthorne, David Greene; stepson Ruben Garza Jr.; grandchildren Alyssa, Tyler, Marcos and Daniel.
A Celebration of Sonny's life will be held at a later date due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to https://www.flyfishingcharlotte.com/sonny which supports the mission, conservation and promotion of flyfishing.
