Also his two daughters, very confident in his love, who adored him, Suzanne Minton and husband, Richard of Atlanta, GA and Catherine Brown and Amrik Singh, both of Charlotte; his brothers John A. Brown (Joanne) of Winston Salem and Joe H. Brown (Karen) of Lewisville NC.
The service will be at 2pm at McEwen Chapel, Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte with Rev. Wayne Spear of Firestone Wesleyan Church of Gastonia officiating. Visitation will be held at 1pm prior to service. His body will be laid to rest at Sharon Memorial Park.
Jim was born in Belton, SC on September 26, 1933 to James Denver & Ola O. Hannah Brown. They relocated to Charlotte when he was seven. He graduated from Harding High School in 1952 where he played football and lettered in track. He was active in Youth for Christ and President of his Bible class. He later attained a degree in Theology. He pastored several small churches in the area while simultaneously working for the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services. He obtained an MD in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from UNCC and began his 28 year career as a “VR” counselor, working with those with various physical disabilities and addictions.
His first love was spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. His family might say his second was helping others. His greatest trait was his ability to listen. His faith and positive attitude also endured.
After retirement he penned “The 12 Steps for Overcomers” patterned after the original 12 Steps with a Christian emphasis. For almost 20 years, he ministered at retirement facilities on a regular basis and started “The Overcomers Church” ministering there until shortly before his death.
Jim enjoyed gardening, shopping, dinner theatre, going to movies, bird watching, his cats and playing Scrabble with his wife. He was often found on the phone with one of his daughters, a relative or a friend.
He is preceded in death by his parents JD and Ola Brown and infant son Joseph Henry Brown.
In lieu of flowers, please send your gifts to The Brooklyn Tabernacle, 17 Smith Street, Brooklyn NY 11201. This has been a blessing to him for many years.
Arrangements by McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte NC 28212. Condolences to the family may be offered at www.mcewenfs.com.
